The Challenging Ma'akua Ridge Trail

A nice easy stroll through the woods located on the Windward side of Oahu, this hike gives you periodic views of Hau'ula a well as the neighboring valleys. For those who want a little bit more, you can continue up the ridge to get more expansive views of the Windward coast.

This is a great hike for those simply looking to be outside in nature without any overwhelming crowds. Tougher than the nearby  Hauula Loop Trail, Ma'akua Ridge Trail offers a gnarly climb, with steep, tight switchbacks full of rocks, roots and cliffs.

Papali trail: the other name

There is parking on Kamehameha Hwy near the 7-11 or across the street at the beach park. From there it's a short ride north to Hauula Homestead Road. Head down Hauula Homestead Road for about a half mile. When it starts bending to the left be sure to stay straight on towards the mountains. Pass through the yellow gate, proceed to the next gate and ride about 100 yards until you see the trail sign for Ma'akua Ridge Trail on the left.

The trail curves to the left and soon you will see a stream bed on your right you will need to cross. Cross the stream bed to begin your ride. Soon you will reach the first switchback and the fun begins As you progress up several more switchbacks you will reach a point where the trail forks allowing you to choose which direction you want to head around the loop. There is a park bench here with a beautiful view of the ocean to relax on before you start the remainder of your ride.
