Mokule'ia Beach Park - Best Windsurfing Spot
Mokule'ia Beach Park is a lovely white sand beach on Oahu's north coast, west of Wailua. Mokule'ia is a well-known and popular windsurfing location. People looking for various ocean sports are also drawn to the excellent beach and shallow reef. Because it is quite a distance from the closest town of Haleiwa, the beach is virtually never overcrowded; even on weekends, when most of the north coast beaches in the surrounding area are packed, Molule'ia Beach Park stays deserted.
Swimming may be difficult due to the shallow reef on this beach, but it is ideal for snorkeling and spear fishing. During the winter months, when the Kona winds (south wind) blow, it offers excellent conditions for kite and wind surfing, which puts on a magnificent display. Strong waves and hazardous rip currents may wash a person out to sea during the winter, therefore it is generally recommended to remain out of the water if you are inexperienced and carefully monitor the ocean conditions. The beach's smooth white sand is also ideal for lying down and sunbathing. If you need some shade, there are magnificent trees all along the beach's backdrop.
Mokule'ia was also the setting for half of the first season of the television show Lost. Pets are permitted on the beach, so bring your four-legged buddy. There are no lifeguards on duty, however the beach does provide restrooms and fresh water. There are picnic tables and a big parking space. There is also a campground on the beach where you may rent a cottage. In Hawaiian, the word Mokule'ia means "district of abundance."
