Makapuu Lighthouse - An Important Historical Site

One of the best places to watch the sunrise over the Pacific is on Makapu’u Lighthouse. The view includes stunning scenery along the southeastern coast of O’ahu, which you will be able to see when hiking this famous trail. Since its improvements in 2015, the Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail has become one of Oahu's most popular hiking destinations. Also, it is a significant historical site.

While the Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail is highly appreciated among both locals and visitors due to its accessibility and breathtaking vistas, the lighthouse's historical significance makes it become a historical landmark. The construction of the lighthouse started in the mid-1880s, during a time when Hawaii's maritime sector was expanding at a rapid rate. Following the annexation, the United States Congress allocated funds in 1906. The lighthouse first went into service in 1909.

Makapuu Summit Point

The end of the trail is a rewarding one, as you can see most of the east side from Waimanalo and down towards Kailua. It’s also an interesting spot for those looking to get their first glance at Rabbit Island which lies not too far off shore in the Makapu'u Beach area. This Makapuu hiking trail is one of the best hikes on Oahu. It's not very long, but it has an amazing view at the top.

Makapuu Tide Pools - The hidden gem

With time, tidal pools have grown in popularity owing to their unique and hidden beauty, which has contributed to their increased appeal. Its appeal is further boosted by the trip down to the bottom. Scaling the hillside to reach the tidal pools, which are located about halfway up the paved path, takes some time and effort. For this specific portion of the walk, it's recommended to wear sturdy shoes and avoid hiking alone whenever possible. As you descend, there are some arrows spray-painted on the rocks to guide hikers, but it's better to stick to the naturally paved route as much as possible to avoid getting lost. Keep your eyes on the pools below and you'll find your way back on track. Don't be concerned if you wind yourself off the beaten route. Due to a series of recent incidents at the Makapu'u Tidepools, tourists who want to visit these tidal pools are always advised to be extremely cautious.
