Kahana Bay Beach Park
Surrounded on three sides by the majestic Ko'olau Mountains, Kahana Bay is one of the best-kept secrets of windward Oahu. The crescent shore is set against a beautiful backdrop of ironwood trees and the steep and lush Ko'olau Mountain Range. The sandy beach is a great spot for sunbathing, and the ironwood trees provide plenty of shade for a picnic.
Kahana Bay Camping
The waters are generally calm, but few people go swimming here because the water is murky from the runoff of Kahana Stream and the nearshore ocean bottom is rocky. Local residents like to camp here during weekends, so this is when the beach can get busy. A camping permit is required.
Kahana is sure to be an ideal spot if you are looking for trees for shade, picnic tables to enjoy a packed lunch, and there is seldom no more than a handful of people on weekdays.
The south end of the beach is quite empty and spacious. However, the northern end of the beach near the jetty is a popular camping place. The water isn't very clear due to the runoff from the Kahana stream, but is great for those that want to kayak. It is also a popular local spot for fishing.
Kahana Bay Beach Park Tours and Activities
Most visitors, drawn by its forested seaside park and calm tropical waters, stop by here to snap photos enroute to the North Shore. The bay is very shallow and can be murky thanks to the nearby infusion of the Kahana Stream, so swimming is not recommended. Instead, the best parts of this park are both scenic and cultural: Visit the rocky, circular remains of the ancient Huila Fishpond on the eastern side of the bay, or head into the park to speak with residents.
