Home Of The Maunalua Bay Beach And The Koko Head
The Maunalua Bay Beach is a paradise for scuba divers. There are about 20 dive sites that range from coral dives to wreck dives. Artificial wrecks such as the Kahala Barge, the Baby Barge, or the LCU wreck can be explored when diving. The Corsair Wreck is a real dive site that is also located here. Very beautiful sea caves, China Wall, Fantasy reef, spitting caves, and angler's reef can be explored with the coral dive. Boaters, kayakers, paddlers, canoe, and picnickers find the location provides the ideal conditions for their sport. The beach almost is not ideal for swimming, the water is shallow and rocky.
Scenic views can also be seen from the beach. Koko Head and Koko crater can be seen on the eastern side of the bay offering beautiful photographic views. It is also the reason for the name of the beach. Maunalua in Hawaiian means "two mountains" referring to both Koko crater and Koko Head.
Koko Head: a natural-made wonder
Steep, no-shade, climb to the top of Koko Head Crater that includes spectacular panoramic views of the east Honolulu shoreline, Hanauma Bay, and parts of the Big Island. The 1,000+ step walking track consists of abandoned railroad ties that run along the crater's west side to the top of Koko Crater Trail. The military used them previously during World War 2 as part of an incline tram to transport supplies to a lookout post at the summit. Halfway up, there is a "bridge" portion without ground beneath ~50 rail steps, but there is bypassing trail if you're scared.
Just a short drive from Diamond Head and Waikiki, this popular hiking trail can be accessed at Koko Head. Bring water since this is a prime area for humidity and hot summer days. Visitors might also be interested in the Koko Crater Botanical Garden which can be accessed inside the crater. Visitors can drive around the crater to the opposite side to access the gardens.
