Kailua Beach Park History

The park was previously known as Camp Kailua, but in 1940, the Honolulu County Council designated it as a "Beach Park". The Obama family regularly visits Kailua to celebrate Christmas and enjoy the beach. They have a residence on the northern end of Kailua Bay and are often seen golfing, dining, and making public appearances in and around Kailua town.

Kailua Beach Park Activities

Kayaking, stand up paddling and kitesurfing are some of the most popular activities at this beach park. You can also enjoy sun tanning or relaxing when you're not out on one of these watersports. The annual Fourth Of July fireworks display at Kailua Beach Park is always a huge event with crowds gathering from all over town as well as visitors come to watch it too.

Kailua Bay is also the home of the Kailua Bay Canoe Racing Club, which is very competitive. The canoe is a time-honored Hawaiian custom that dates back hundreds of years. The canoes retain a design that is reminiscent of the historic Polynesian voyaging or fishing boats of the region. To stand and watch the teams race around Kailua Bay is a true pleasure. Small-scale sprint regattas to large-scale channel crossings from one island to another are all possible types of races.
