Nuuanu Pali Lookout - Oahu - Hawaii
The Nu'uanu Pali Lookout is one of the most stunning views on Oahu. With a short 5-mile drive from downtown Honolulu, you can spot Kailua town and Kaneohe Bay while also getting an amazing view over some incredible scenery that includes Ko’olau Mountains!
One word of caution, however: if you aren't prepared, the wind will actually blow you off your feet at this location, so remove your hats and hang on to your children! The location of one of King Kamehameha's most gruesome triumphs, apart from its apparent beauty, is also notable for another reason.
After driving Oahu's men into the hills in 1795, Kamehameha the Great's soldiers forced them over these cliffs and to their deaths. Following the fight, Kamehameha was able to complete his mission and bring the islands back together. It is said that over 500 human skulls were discovered at the foot of the mountain more than a century later.
Note that the Pali Lookout is also renowned for its fierce and howling winds, which can be heard from miles away. When you feel the wind press up against you, hear the wind whistle over the mountains, and see the magnificent views of Oahu's lush Windward Coast, you'll understand why the Nuuanu Pali Lookout is considered one of the island's finest scenic spots.
The lookout is open from 9 a.m - 4 p.m, and admission is free! You can also bring your camera or phone with you for the perfect Instagram post. Just don't forget a jacket because it does get chilly when we're on the summit. After soaking in the breathtaking scenery, return to the Pali Highway, where you'll soon be able to choose between heading into the town of Kailua and hitting the beach, or heading to Oahu's famous North Shore.
A quick trip off the Pali Highway between Honolulu and Kailua allows visitors to take in some breathtaking views of Oahu's windward side without having to break their day! Trust us, it’s must be on your planned activities list.
