The Stunning Vistas at Makapuu Point Lookout In Hawaii

The Makapu'u Point Lookout is situated on Oahu's southeastern edge, right off Kalanianaole Highway. There is a parking lot and a paved path leading to an area with views of Makapu'u Beach Park, the sea cliffs, Rabbit Island (also known as Manana Island), and Kaohikaipu Island.

The lookout is part of the 38-acre Makapu'u Point State Wayside Park, which also includes Makapu'u Head and the Makapu'u Point lighthouse. The lighthouse is not visible from the viewpoint. To reach there, go up the paved road that starts right below the lookout's entrance (on the Hawaii Kai side of the lookout). It's a 1.75-mile walk.

Enjoy the breathtaking at Makapuu Point Lookout

There is a lot to see in a limited space at Makapu'u Point. As you go down the hill on the cliff-hugging roadway, you will see a white sandy beach at the foot of the cliffs. Makapu'u Beach Park, located opposite Sea Life Park, is surrounded by steep black cliffs and is popular with bodyboarders and surfers. Swimming is not advised here, but a walk down the sandy beach or among the rock pools is quite relaxing. There are picnic spots as well as BBQ grills. The Ku Heiau, situated to the left of the Makapu'u Beach parking lot, is considered holy by the Hawaiian people and is carefully maintained by locals.

Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Lookout Trail

You have the option of driving up to this lookout to take in the breathtaking views, or you can hike up. On the 2.5-mile Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Lookout Trail, you can get right to the top to experience these views up close. The views from this lookout, which are framed by 647-foot sea cliffs, are spectacular no matter which path you take. Bring your camera because these are some of Hawaii's best panoramic views.
