The History of Hanauma Bay
Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve was designated a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park in 1967. Formed within an ancient volcanic cone, Hanauma Bay offers visitors today the chance to explore what remains of Hawaii's pristine ecosystem after 1990 when city planners laid out plans for restoration efforts that have helped make this one of America’s most popular beaches as well known across international borders. This is a place where people from all around the world come to see its beauty and enjoy the breathtaking views as well as the sound of the waves.
In order to conserve Hanauma Bay’s environment, a marine education centre was opened in 2002 for visitors. First-time visitors are required by to watch an informative 9-minute video before entering this park so they can learn about how their actions will affect not only themselves but many different types of animals as well. All visitors are obliged by law to abstain from mistreating marine creatures and from touching or walking on coral reefs. It was closed to tourists owing to safety concerns in the early 2000s at a natural spa known as the "Toilet Bowl" because of the rise and fall of water caused by the crashing of the waves.
"Hana" is the Hawaiian word for "Bay," and "uma" alludes to the curved shapes of the ancient canoes that sailed across the bay. Hanauma Bay has been a favorite fishing and leisure spot for Hawaiian royalty for many years. For centuries people have been coming here for fishing or just to enjoy what seems like a never-ending bay with its beautiful curves.
