Discover O’ahu Scenic Windward Coastline
Driving up the sloping Pali Highway, you'll see skyscrapers and the vast metropolis of Honolulu give way to beautiful valleys and rural vistas as you pass through the Hawaiian Islands. It seems as if you've entered another planet as you emerge from the tunnels east of the Koolau Mountain Range, with a turquoise ocean shimmering in the background. A visit to the Windward Coast of Oahu shows a more relaxed side of the island, as well as some of the most breathtaking natural beauty in Hawaii.
You have two choices for travel from Kailua town: either north or south of the island. Following the coast in a round direction, you'll pass Sea Life Park, the Makapuu Point Lighthouse, and then Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach. Alternatively, drive north and spend a day exploring the Windward Coast, which winds lazily around the island toward the North Shore, stopping at interesting stops along the way, such as the serene Valley of the Temples, which is home to a stunning Japanese Buddhist temple, as well as the North Shore.
Driving down the two-lane highway, it's impossible to miss Mokolii, the small island affectionately known as "Chinaman's Hat." Pullover to the park and stretch your legs or enjoy a picnic in the sunshine. Kualoa Ranch, located just across the highway, is one of Hawaii's most visited but least known attractions: it is one of the state's most visited but least recognized attractions. The beautiful valley around the ranch, which has served as the setting for a slew of films and television programs, including "Jurassic Park" and "Lost," dates back many centuries. There are a variety of activities available, including horseback riding, ziplining, ATV excursions, and a variety of other attractions. As it meanders through Kaaawa ("Ka-ah-vah") and Kahana Bay, the Kamehameha Highway eventually leads to Oahu's North Shore, which is home to some of the finest surf locations in Hawaii—and, according to some, the world—and the most beautiful scenery.
The breathtaking beauty of Hawaii is best experienced when traveling along the island's northeast (Windward) shore. There are several points of interest that will make your experience more enjoyable, too! Trust us, it’s worth it!
